If there is laughter present you can assume that the relationship is a healthy one. When the laughter ceases you can be quite certain that the relationship is on the down slide. This laughter barometer can be applied to any relationship at home, at work and at play. Laughter means that youre having fun and fun means that things are going well.. Take a look at the relationships around you. Do the couples laugh a lot together? Has the laughter stopped in some of your relationships? Here are a few ideas you can use to make certain that laughter remains an ever present reality in your relationships thus ensuring their quality and endurance. Remember introducing humor to previously humorless relationships might take time but the results will be worth the effort. Start slowly by working on your own fun loving, cheery disposition. Laughter and humor are contagious so it wont be long before others catch the bug. * Remember that a sense of humor is learned, not inherited. * Commit to becoming a humor hound. Look for humor everywhere. When something strikes you funny enjoy it. Let the laughter flow. The laughter that this simple activity generates is a joy to behold. Try this will your friends sometime. * Collect cartoons and jokes and put them on display on the fridge or the bulletin board. Make sure to avoid racist, sexist or filthy humor. The is plenty of good clean humor to go around without resorting to these. Remember that there is a difference between dirty and earthy humor. I personally like earthy humor. I dont appreciate dirty material. * Watch comedy movies and television programs as often a possible. * Use humor to neutralize conflict in your relationships. When things get tense use self deprecating humor to lighten things up. I remember one evening having an argument with my wife, Carol. In the heat of the moment she said something totally out of character. She said something hurtful. In my surprise I looked at her and said, Carol, when you say things like that you stoop to my level. By Audrey Nezer Now is the time of year when organizations express gratitude to their customers and clients by mailing the standard and ubiquitous Christmas-Kwanzaa-Channukah-New-Year-Chinese-New-Year cards. These cards make customers feel appreciated. We’re closing in the end of another year. With the approaching holiday parties, fundraisers, and galas, let alone the reality of tight budgets, you are wondering how you are going to get that Christmas-kwanzaa-channukah-new-year-chinese-new-year card designed, printed and mailed before mid-December. By the second week in December, you’ve already missed the deadline to order cards from one of the many catalogs that can foil stamp the world with Joy in 12 different languages. Good thing it would be less cheesy to send each of your clients a cheese log. You could always wait and send a New Year’s card after January 1, but I should warn you that sending new year’s greetings shortly after the new year is the walk-of-shame of company holiday wishes. Here are a few creative solutions to the ubiquitous holiday card dilemma; each will make your company memorable and keep you sane. Pick another holiday and make it your own: If youre in the chocolate business, send your big annual promotion on Valentines Day. If youre in healthcare, get people moving with wishes for an active spring. Are you a nonprofit? Thank your major donors in late January with a post-new-year bottle of Tylenol after the holiday galas are over. Groundhog day, St. Patricks Day, Halloween theyre all up for grabs, and those who receive your greetings will actually have time to appreciate your creativity. Quality over Quantity: If you really feel you need to send something in December, limit the recipients and give them something really nice and I dont mean a calendar mug with your logo on it. For example, if your organization is involved in international issues or trade, buy your quality clients a set of world spices from Dean & Deluca. A Fruit-of-the-month gift would be perfect for philanthropists who donate generously to gay rights organizations (if they have a sense of humor, theyll love it all the more). If you are in the import/export business, give your top reps a really high-quality telephone headpiece for all the talking they do for you. The options are endless. Use your imagination and think about the person receiving the gift; what would they truly appreciate? By limiting recipients, you create a small prestigious circle that includes a few chosen individuals. Pick a holiday or event that reflects your business: There are 365 days in the year and for each day, there is a celebration going on somewhere in the world. Are you in the fashion industry? The Japanese celebrate Koromo-Gaye on June 1. This is the day people store their winter clothes in favor of lightweight summer clothes; school children change their uniforms. Are you in healthcare? Celebrate Florence Nightingales Birthday on May 12. It falls in the middle of National Hospital Week celebrated in the U.S. and Britain. Send a card that thanks your donors for their continued support. Florence Nightingale would be proud. World Holiday Book by Anneli Rufus lists a holiday or event for each day of the year. You just might find the perfect holiday to use as a Christmas-kwanzaa-channukah-new-year-chinese-new-year replacement. If you feel you really must send your nearest and dearest 8,000 clients a card, here are some ideas: Make it a keeper. Create something that they can use throughout the year. A well-designed wall calendar works well. You could also start a 4-part series of calendar postcards that they receive at the beginning of each quarter. Or send them a card that can be perforated into four bookmarks (perfect if you sell books or are involved with literacy awareness). Be funny. Avoid the standard gold, red and green. Give your logo a break from being front and center. Be funny. Last season I sent a card with calendar and the greeting If, during this time of year, your tradition involves standing on your head and chanting wildly to a coconut, make it the best headstand and the biggest coconut ever. Most of my clients laughed, some were confused, but they all used the calendar. Overly earnest or mushy cards may be appropriate within some families, but I find humor is a better way to go for large mailings. Use a Different December Holiday. Wish everyone a happy Saturnalia instead of a the more generic Happy Holidays. Saturnalia is a week-long Roman holiday that starts on December 17th. This was the day that masters gave their slaves a weeks freedom and reversed roles by becoming their indentured servants. This gives you an opportunity to ask your clients what you can do for them for their continued support. Include in your card a discount coupon for your services. It is always a great time to thank the people who support your company or organization; dont waste the opportunity or your money in December with a forgettable card, especially a forgettable card that has been pre-printed with signatures. Make it personal. Make time during the year when you can put your energy into finding a unique way to thank the people who support your company. Even if you need to send a large December mailing, take a risk. Let your company culture and personality come through. Thats what will make you memorable. By Tom Domin It’s time to “Google” yourself. Go to google.com right now and type in your name. Click “Enter” on your keyboard or “Google Search” on your screen. The result that is displayed is your online identity or profile. You can search using my name for a comparison…tom domin. If you don’t believe some of your mortgage prospects are checking you out using Google…think again! Thanks to Google, it’s become ridiculously easy for prospects and customers to find out more about you as a mortgage professional, just by typing your name into the Google search engine. Here’s the thing…they’re looking for search results of you on the internet, to see what third party references will reveal about your mortgage business. Essentially, they are “checking you out.” They are looking to evaluate your “online identity or profile” which is a collection of all of the information about you on the Internet, and whether that information is mostly positive, or negative. Here’s a quick review of what a prospect might find when they “Google” you, and what impact that information might have on their decision to do business with you. 1. Positive identity/profile - Your prospect finds numerous mentions of you online including the website you set up using your name.com as your mortgage site. They find articles you may have written about mortgage and credit issues. They may also find your name associated with the city they live in, local newspapers, as well as any professional associations you may be connected with. Congratulations, your prospect found you. This goes a long way in establishing credibility and trust in their eyes. I’m sure they won’t hesitate contacting you and discussing their mortgage requirements with you. 2. Negative identity/profile - Your prospect found negative comments or testimonials about you from previous customers, or your name was found associated with a negative website or negative group or association. This one is trouble…your prospect can form a pre-conceived opinion of you and may then pass you by and contact another mortgage professional. 3. Neutral identity/profile - Your prospect can’t find any information about you. Neutral is not good - Despite your attempt to make your mortgage business look successful, your prospects may decide that since they couldn’t find any record of you…you are a very small cog in the big mortgage wheel…and may decide to go elsewhere. Warning…In the months and years ahead, your desire to remain anonymous on the internet will cost you and your mortgage business big bucks. The chances are good you need to establish and/or improve your online identity/profile. The best way to do this is to focus your efforts and some time on actually building that positive online identity/profile. Here are a few ways to do that… 1. Reserve a domain name for your personal mortgage website and use your personal name. The search engines will find you in short order. When someone does Google your name, your website will come up first in the findings. 2. Write a few good mortgage and credit articles for homebuyers and homeowners and submit them to article directories, local newspapers, and community websites. Use a reference box at the end of your article which identifies both you and your mortgage website. Google will find your articles and they will eventually be listed when someone does Google your name. 3. Sponsor or help with a community event. Ask the organization you are supporting if they post information about the event online, including the names of the sponsors. A Google search that associates you with a major local charity would be viewed very positively by your mortgage prospects. 4. Start a “blog” (short for web logs). This one requires some research and a little learning curve on your part…that’s why we left it for last. However, once set-up, your investment of time each week is really minimal. Search engines like Google love blogs, readily index them, and then show the results, when someone Googles your name. OK, there you have it. Remember, it will become increasingly important for you to manage and control your online identity/profile. By increasing the positive search results of your name online, you’ll give added confidence to your Google savvy prospects and customers and increase your mortgage business as a result. Several centuries ago, John Cabot, sailing under the English flag, found the richest fishing area the world would come to know. Cod stocks in the Grand Banks region off the coast of Newfoundland were so bountiful and endless that the wheels starting to turn. England saw the potential wealth that cod fishing could bring their country. Cod fish, once caught, could be dried and salted and sailed back to Europe. Cod was light and easily transported and furthermore, less expensive that other meats such as beef, pork, or lamb. At that point in time, the wealth that cod could bring to the European market was thought to surpass that of South American gold or Caribbean sugar. The English fisherman saw large cod fish, sturgeon and salmon and very much plentiful. Huge oysters, herring, and squid were also found in endless amounts. Today, sorry to say, that Newfoundlands cod stocks are gone. During the deep-sea, mechanized trawler days, the cods stocks have been no match for the large nets of these trawlers. The entire peninsula of Newfoundland was dependent upon the fishing industry for its employment. People either fished the waters, built the ships that fished the waters or worked in the fish plants.
