Using a Shed as a Garden Office

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Garry John Some of us would live in our gardens if we could. To be surrounded by the lush beauty of nature and growing things, the soothing sounds of the wind rustling leaves, the buzzing of bees and the sweet trill of the birds is the ultimate in luxury - but it’s impractical for most of us. What’s not impractical, though, is using a garden shed as a garden office to leave at least some of the stresses of every day work behind. If you work from home, you know how important having your own space for an office is. It may mean taking over a spare bedroom for your desk and computer, or refinishing a basement room to take you out of the hustle and bustle of the family. Even if you live alone, being ‘in the office’ adds a psychological nudge that makes you feel like you’re at ‘work’ rather than lounging around the house and subject to distraction. More and more, those who work at home are opting to outfit a garden shed and using it as a garden office. So popular an option is using a shed as a garden office, that the BBC has reported on it in their online Magazine. According to correspondent Giles Wilson, using a shed as a garden office is a high-priced luxury conversion - but we have our doubts. For the average work-at-home business mom or pop, managing a web site, or selling out of their homes, high end items like 36 power outlets and a full security system aren’t necessary. Instead, one could turn a shed into a garden office for far less money - and still enjoy all the benefits of using a shed as a garden office. First, consider your needs. Do you already have a garden shed? In the house where I grew up, the garden shed was a magical little haven that exactly matched our house in color and style - a tiny little room just the right size to fit a desk and chair and a few office cabinets. For someone like me, a professional writer working at home, converting the garden shed to a garden office would be a simple matter of adding a few outlets - there’s electricity there already - and insulating the walls for the winter. Consider your needs before you start dreaming though. Will you need to run wiring from the house to the shed? Add in the cost of the electricians, then. If you’re in an area with cold winters or hot summers, will you need insulation, heat and air conditioning? Remember, it’s more than just your comfort you need consider. When you’re using a shed as a garden office, you also need to consider the ‘comfort’ of your equipment. Most electrical equipment - computers and the like - are happiest if the temperature is kept at around 68 F. What about phones? Will you need a land line with multiple extensions - or will your cell phone do just fine? For that matter - with a good wireless connection, can you make do with a laptop and docking station for your computing needs? Using a shed as a garden office can be a wonderful option - and depending on your needs, it can be extremely affordable - or pure luxury. Think it through, make your plans, and then decide if it’s worth it to have a beautiful, comfortable office that makes your workday a pleasure. Garry John has contributed to many home improvement sites such as garden offices and sun rooms. SECRET CARP and CATFISH Baits to Hook the Biggest Fish Most Consistently

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Tim F. Richardson * Many top anglers have used the so called balanced nutritional profile bait approach and thinking as the basics of their long term success, and some have even turned their secret bait formulas into some of the shop-bought baits seen today. Using this balanced nutritional value (BNV) approach, even relative carp fishing beginners can regularly start catching bigger fish far more consistently than using cheap carbohydrate flours based baits , when regularly applied to a water; to take advantage of the carps feeding habits. I fished one UK water where an average 80% of anglers blanked for big fish during 12 to 72 hour sessions! The lake carp record at the time was 39.12 pounds and the big catfish were getting caught less and less frequently due to fishing pressure. I used a nutritional value bait the fish had never seen in this form. The first fish I landed was a 36.8 pound mirror carp, followed by a 68 pound catfish! The following week I returned and again, I landed a different 36.8 pound mirror, followed by a 58 pound catfish! I consistently applied the bait to the water over an 8 week period. The highlight was catching two different 38.12 pound mirror carp in 24 hours, along with nine 25 pound plus mirrors and commons! The total for this period was sixty upper 20s, and eleven 30 pounders; some of which were caught twice! (There were estimated to be fifteen 30s in the lake at the time) To whet your appetite a bit more, I applied my own design HNV bait to a small heavily fished water with the specific intention of selectively catching multiple 40 pound fish in a session; achieving three 40s in three days including a new lake record. After catching five 40s from April up to July of that season, these boilies really proved this theory correct! You really need a basic understanding of a carps essential dietary needs, in order to produce a bait that will attract and catch the biggest or often, most wary carp, in both the short and the long term! Your general aim, is to provide a practical boilie bait that is quickly and easily digestible, complete food source, that is extremely energy efficient to eat, palatable, and gives out excellent strong, sensory signals of its beneficial nutritional values. This bait could contain all the essential dietary needs a carp can be lacking at any particular time in your particular lake; e.g. even a specific nutrient that it cannot fill by any natural food source (or by anglers baits!) Instinct is hardwired into a carps brain to detect and remember essential food sources. Naturally, carp patrol their environment, constantly unconsciously detecting potential food signals. They are like opportunistic cows, grazing the most energy efficient and abundant food. Depending on the individual, it may spend days or even months on one area, monopolizing one or multiple food sources. The carp go into moods and modes of feeding, that are affected by many combined factors ; dietary needs, water temperatures, time of year and natural food availability, fishing pressure, wind - driven oxygen concentration, light intensity, bodily digestive rhythms, e.g. morning / evening, Solar / lunar cycles, dropping / rising / static air pressure, sudden changes in air pressures, etc. Its our purpose in designing our bait, to ensure that whatever the carps feeding mood is, the carp have a hard-wired need to pick up your bait up. For example, day/night, place and time, slow, cautious, fast, anxious, erratic/confident, etc. Just like blood worm, snail, mussel, insect larvae, shrimp etc, a carp seems to know where they are and will be, in advance of the correct feeding conditions to occur. PICTURE THIS! For example, if it was a very hot, dry mid-summers afternoon, after 3 weeks of a high pressure anticyclonic system, static over the lake region. Quickly it may become very dark, and a thunderstorm could hit and lash the water with heavy rain and strong North East winds. However, the carp may not feed at that time! Instead they could drift off the wind, gradually assembling in the opposite area of the lake to the wind-hit end. The wind then drops as the storm passes by. How would they know that the following morning a breeze would start blowing into the area they remained in that night! Later that afternoon, they go on a sudden half-hour feeding frenzy that stops, just as suddenly as it began, as the sun starts to turn the sky red! The biggest fish in the lake are banked by an angler who judged the condition correctly and estimated in advance that they would feed there. But why did he catch the very biggest, least seen, most wary and least-caught 3 fish in the lake, when other anglers were also fishing adjacent and on the carp route of travel, fishing regular natural feeding spots? His preferable bait! The successful angler has designed, produced and regularly fed an alternative, highly nutritional bait, whilst fishing the lake over a number of occasions. This bait does not represent danger to the fish to the same degree as other peoples boilie baits, because the fish find it different to any they have been caught on before and so consider them safe to eat. They contain all the carps essential dietary needs for that particular water. The baits are a different size, feel, buoyancy, density, texture, consistency, color, and shape to the usual found. There is a different smell, taste, aroma; maybe its something thats missing, or in a reduced amount in its ingredients that makes it unique. Perhaps its the special herb extracts the angler tracked down, or a protein source the other anglers havent seen in the bait adverts. Whatever it is, the purpose has been achieved, i.e. the carp liked the new bait so much, that they went looking for it, knowing it would be where it is regularly found. This process mimics the carps natural behaviour, except something is not right. How is it only one angler caught, and why all those big fish in such a short time? It does not sound normal does it! An average-ability carp angler cant normally achieve this feat can he?.Um Yes !!! When he really understands the Balanced High Nutritional Value Bait concept and how to make it work for him. He can achieve the incredible. A carp may be so conditioned by anglers baits and being hooked, that it is permanently on high alert when near any bait. It may have a ritual dance which may be repeated for hours - even days, before bait will be considered safe to eat. Apparently, the following is one of Terry Hearns successful strategies; offering small bait amounts by hand, into natural looking feeding spots for days, even months, before fishing. This is to get the carp to eat the bait, feel it is safe to eat, and have it become a natural food source The fish pick up the bait because its attractive and a potential food source, but continue to visit the developed naturalized feeding spot to eat it because they instinctively feel it benefits them and is safe! When he notices the baits are being eaten confidently by the target carp in that area of the lake, Terry may only fish for one morning but catch all his target fish! Such is the power of this approach!! Ive seen a carp travel clean across a six acre lake in about two minutes to locate a preferred bait source!! And this is across many other anglers baits, with many, varied qualities of nutrition, levels of attraction, and states of breakdown. But it sinks down and begins confidently feeding on one specific type of bait. Its brain via its senses has made it select this bait because it features what none of the others have; the safest, most abundant energy efficient source, of an essential dietary requirement, that an individual fish is deficient in,at any specific time! This can happen for you too, by regularly baiting, two or three times a week, with the right bait. For example, in your own secret bait recipe or formula, it could be just one mineral like phosphorus, or one particular essential amino acid like lysine, or it could be a particular group of higher quality and freshness long-chain essential fatty acids, or even, a specific seed, bean, or root extract that it finds almost addictive because of the stimulatory effect on its digestion, immune system or metabolism. It may be in tiny amounts in the bait, like only 4 milligrams, and form part of a predigested extract powder product, spirulina for example, or perhaps its a vitamin like B6, found in very high levels in soluble yeasts which also gets the carp highly excited, because of the very high taste enhancing quality of the glutamic acids it contains! Carp prefer ‘ENERGY EFFICIENT’ FOOD! Carp are not that clever that they ignore an essential food source they need!!! Scientific tests prove this beyond any doubt! I hope your homemade bait ideas have been expanded a little now. Ther are many more ways to make bait and ingredients that are very little known, extremely over-looked and under-estimated and some known only by a few who really know their huge catches power… The author has many more fishing and bait edges up his sleeve. How Homeopathic Treatment Can Bring Gout Symptom Relief

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Lisa McDowell There are times when anyone can become frustrated with pain and discomfort, and they might wonder if other types of treatments might work better than what they are currently getting. This is becoming more and more popular, and homeopathy is what most turn to first. This is treatment based on methods other than prescription medications and surgeries to help with various ailments. Homeopathy can zero in on one gout symptom, but also tends to focus on the healing and care of the entire body as well. The basic idea behind this practice is that some believe small doses of some medications or herbs can mimic illness in healthy people, and those same things can be given to someone suffering from that illness to promote healing. In most cases, a physician who practices homeopathic medicine will suggest that any of the things that might help with gout be taken one at a time to see what works. It can be a longer process, but finding the right thing will bring much relief for some. Usually one dose is taken, and then is given a certain amount of time to work. If it does work, it should be left alone to see how long it works. How much and how often will be determined by the type of medication and how well it works. If nothing happens, that type should be eliminated and something else will be tried. One type that might be helpful is Bryonia. This can be good when pain is substantial, and tenderness is a huge problem. Pain comes from walking and touching. It might make a person not want to be touched at all, and they may want to be alone. Colchicum is another that is very much like this one. It focuses on gout pain the heel or foot. Since the most common spot for gout is the toe, this works great for many. When the joint is red, swollen, and tender to touch, this can be used. It is especially useful when given to someone who seems to have seasonal flare ups, and tends to be fatigued when stricken. There are also some that are useful when the pain is not quite as severe, but it still needs to be taken care of quickly. Rhus toxicodendron is for someone who has stiff and painful joints that are sometimes hot and swelling may be apparent. However, it would seem that some movement might help, so the flare up is not quite as tender to the touch. Berberis vulgaris is for a pain that is all over the body rather than completely localized to one part of the body. It helps when motions and walking are painful, and the body as a whole needs some relief. Though it is possible to find and try these things at home, it is always a good idea to find someone who is licensed in homeopathic medicine to assist someone who seeks relief. They have the benefit of knowing the history of this practice that goes back in time almost 2000 years. There is a huge benefit to trying things like this with someone who has knowledge and experience on their side. Some of these things can interact with prescriptions, so consult with a doctor if you are taking anything, or want to stop taking something. These can help with almost any gout symptom, but it is never a good idea to put the health at risk in any fashion. Body, Mind, Spirit - The Key is What’s In-Between

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Daryl Kulak If you have a health problem with your body, go to a doctor. With your mind, go see a psychologist. With your spirit, see your pastor, priest or rabbi. What could be wrong with that? Do you know when most heart attacks occur in American society? Mondays between 6am and 8am. Why is that? Well, of course, it’s because we wake up after our happy weekend and we think “Ugh, Work.” And that bothers some of us so much, we just die. Literally. Is there a physical cause to this heart attack? Of course. Maybe the person was overweight, or maybe they had too much cholesterol in their blood. But why did they kick off on a Monday? Most health problems have a mental aspect as well as physical. Remember Fred Sanford in Sanford and Son? Everytime his son would aggrevate him, he would fake having a heart attack. “I’m coming, Elizabeth!!” Obviously, he was just pretending, but it is true that an emotional event can bring on all kinds of physical problems. So, what happens when you go to a doctor about your heart, or your elbow, or your sore throat? He can only inspect the physical. He doesn’t feel qualified to delve into the emotional, mental or even spiritual aspects of your problems. And yet, you know those things are there, and you know they’re contributing to your problem. Your doctor might refer you to a psychologist if he suspects that your problem includes something mental, but that’s usually only after he’s exhausted all his “physical options.” It used to be doctors would say “Don’t worry, it’s all in your head.” Now that’s not considered very good manners. But what a strange thing to say! What disease isn’t at least partially in your head? Cancer has been proven to be a problem with the immune system. If your immune system is operating at full power, it fights and beats the cancer cells before they have a chance. And it’s also proven that your immune system takes a dive whenever you feel bad emotionally. Can you imagine? Depression could be linked to cancer? Most doctors would not admit that. They say cancer is linked to genetics and possibly to diet. That’s it. Physical causes only. But there’s so much more we can do. For our example of a better approach, let’s look at Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chinese Medicine is a very interesting combination of therapies that address body, mind and spirit. They also focus on the “in-between.” These therapies recognize, not only body, mind and spirit, but the intangible “something” that sits in-between each of these. They even have a word for it. They call it “chi.” This is a kind of life force that regulates all the parts of “you:” body, mind and spirit. If your chi is good, then your health is good. Chinese therapies include acupuncture, where tiny needles are put into the skin in certain parts of the body. The focus? To improve chi. It also includes chi gong, which is a set of exercises and meditations to improve, you guessed it, chi. Chinese massage, tai chi, herbs, and many other therapies are all focused on the “in-between,” the “chi.” Many ancient health systems have a similar concept to chi. With the medicine practiced in India, called ayurveda, there is a concept called “prana.” It means the same thing. It’s a life energy, and all Indian therapies focus on improving that life energy, bringing it up to full force so your body, mind and spirit can thrive. In America, we tend to want medications that will mask over the symptoms of our problems, not those that go after the root cause. In fact, the top five selling pharmaceutical drugs were all symptom-fixers, including Lipitor, a cholesterol-reducing drug, and Zoloft, an anti-depressant. Does this really seem like the best way to combat illness? To throw a blanket over the problem so we can’t see it? Next time you have a health problem, no matter how small, I’d like you to think about how it might be your “chi.” It might be a problem, not with your throat, or your butt or your head, but it might be something that a qualified Chinese medical doctor could help you with, and, in the process, help your overall health in every way. P2P Online Loans — A New Vehicle for Borrowers and Lenders

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Russ_Pratt]Russ Pratt Since February, 2006, there’s a new way for individuals to get small loans in the United States utilizing Person-to-person (P2P) Online Lending on eBay-like websites. On one such site, borrowers post listings requesting an unsecured, three-year loan of up to $25,000 indicating the maximum interest rate they wish to pay. Other people (”lenders”) review and select listings based on the borrower’s credit, debt profile, and group affiliation. Lenders place bids for the amount and rate they’re willing to lend, usually for a piece of the loan (at least $50). When a listing is fully-funded, the site handles all of the tasks needed for payment and collection of the loan. The site has over 1,200 loans listed currently. They range from $5,000 at 4.75% interest for home remodeling (1 bid) to $3,000 at 29% interest to consolidate credit card debt (12 bids). Eight Suggested Steps to Receiving a P2P Loan Examine your other loan options. Shop around for loans from other sources that offer the best interest rates and terms. For example, secured loans generally offer lower interest rates than unsecured loans, but put the property that secured the loan at greater risk.Join a group. While this step is optional, it is recommended as many lenders tend to favor loans posted by borrowers who belong to a group. A group can be any collection of people, small or large, with common interests. The top ten groups by member size each have hundreds of members and appear to have collectively generated over a third of the fully-funded loans on this site. Groups also have an interest in not having their borrowers default on loans.Retrieve your credit grade. Borrowers provide their annual income so a debt to income (DTI) ratio can be determined and displayed. A credit check is run and a borrower’s credit grade (AA, A, B, C, D, E, High Risk, No Credit) is also determined and displayed. Generally, the combination of a higher credit grade, DTI under 20%, a description that appeals to lenders and lower loan amount improves your chance of getting fully-funded at a lower interest rate.Research and create your loan listing. After passing an anti-fraud and identity check, borrowers can request unsecured loans from $1,000 to $25,000 at rates they select. It is important to use a high enough starting rate appropriate to your circumstances that will attract lenders to want to bid on your loan. The site shows useful statistics about recent loans, interest rates by grades and loan size that potentially will secure funding. Examine other successful and unsuccessful listings for ideas. Your loan listing is what will inspire lenders to bid against each other to make you a loan. It communicates important details to lenders about you and your loan. Consider uploading pictures and write a lot about the purpose of the loan and how you’ll be able to repay it.Get your listing reviewed. Have one or more people review your listing, including possibly your group leader. Would it move, touch or inspire them to lend you money? What would? Does the description contain enough information for a lender to understand why you’re asking for a loan and how the monthly loan payment fits your budget?Watch the bidding. You can see the bid history for your listing, which shows the lenders who are bidding, the amounts they’re bidding, and over time will show your interest rate dropping as more bids come in. If there’s insufficient bidding after several days, try to determine why. If this listing doesnt succeed, you can try a different approach in a subsequent listing.Receive your money. If your listing is fully-funded, funds from the winning lenders will be deposited into your bank account a few days later. Sometimes a final identity verification is conducted before funds are released.Make your payments and improve your credit rating. Every month, the site will make an automatic withdrawal from your bank account for the amount of your monthly payment and divide that payment among your lenders. If a borrower misses a payment, a group leader is notified before a collection agency. At any time you can pay off all or part your loan early without penalty. Because the site reports all payment activity to a credit bureau, this is a good way for new borrowers to improve their credit history while maintaining their group’s reputation. One of my favorite listings was from a woman requesting a $6,700 loan to replace an existing car loan. At present on this site, a B credit grade and DTI under 20% for this size loan would often generate a loan under 13%. Her loan closed at 8.4%, which is a rate that even the AA credit grade requests haven’t often touched recently. She used pictures, a 16% maximum starting loan rate, and wrote a loan description that inspired 268 bids, as follows: “It’s GENIUS! I have a 2001 Camry. I would like to pay it off with a Prosper Loan. (I’m paying interest on this loan anyway, why shouldn’t real people get that money instead of the bank?) Current balance on the car: $6700. Current monthly payment: $ 220. If I get a Prosper loan at 16% and use it to pay off my car, the monthly payment will be $235. (Yes, that’s a little higher than it is now, but maybe the rate will get bid down a bit. Besides, wait ’til we get to the *genius* part!) Here’s the GENIUS part: Current insurance payment: $120/mo. (The bank requires me to carry expensive coverage.)If I get a Prosper Loan to pay off the car, the new insurance payment will be $70. That’s a savings of $50/mo. Even if the rate on the Prosper loan stays at 16%, that’s still a net savings of $35/mo. Over 36 months, that’s a savings of more than $1200. Genius.” Her listing got fully-funded on day one of a ten-day listing and the interest rate was bid down over the listing period until it closed at 8.4%. Imagine what her savings are now. While I dont recommend you duplicate her ad nearly word for word, I think the listing shows genius, to use her word. It’s interesting, informative, and makes a great deal of financial sense. Not every loan request will get fully funded, but those that do have an opportunity to receive a loan at a rate that’s potentially better than a number of other alternatives. I think P2P Online Lending is here to stay, as do others. Jim Bruene from Online Banking Report predicts that within five years the total market for person-to-person lending in the U.S could surpass 100,000 loans annually, worth more than $1 billion. Beading: Getting Started with a Wonderful Hobby

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Pamela Bruce Making your own bead jewelry is a creative hobby that allows you to produce unique pieces for yourself, family and friends. Here is how you can get started. If you ever asked yourself “couldn’t I do that myself?” as you looked through rows of bead bracelets, necklaces or earrings at a trendy boutique, the answer is yes. Beading is a creative and entertaining hobby that not only will have you produce unique, handmade items of jewelry, but will also be a source of amazing gift ideas for family and friends. The first step would be to find a good local bead shop. While there are wonderful mail order catalogs and websites that will sell you all the supplies, nothing substitutes for the support and advice of experienced sales personnel. Ideally, this store would also offer a number of beginning classes that would help you learn basic techniques (if there is no bead shop in your town, some introductory books such as The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Beading will have to do). Start with a simple project, such as a bracelet or basic necklace, and do not go overboard with expensive beads and findings (clasps etc.). I know you are probably itching to use Swarovski crystal, sterling silver and semi-precious beads, but you can work up to that later. Some stores will even offer packaged starter kits that may include a beading board (which helps you with project layout and measurements), some basic tools, beads, wire, findings and a how-to-book. You should then set up your “beading space” preferably an uncluttered, well-lit area. You might have to invest in a good lamp, maybe one combined with a magnifying lens. Remember, you will be stringing some rather tiny objects. Make sure you have enough containers to keep different types and colors of beads separate nothing will spoil your joy of beading like having to hunt for a single bead in a jumbled pile. Beading stores will sell you various storage systems (including beading bags for the beader-on-the-go), but you can also experiment with plastic containers meant to hold small hardware or fishing tackle. Well, there you are ready for your first bead jewelry project. Don’t forget to protect your beading space from curious cats and toddlers. Happy beading! Pamela Bruce lives in Austin, TX. She has been beading since her teens. She sells the bead jewelry she creates at http://www.lovebeadsunlimited.com and also has a blog entitled “Random Ruminations of a Beader” at http://www.cyberbeader.blogspot.com/ Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Pamela_Bruce http://EzineArticles.com/?Beading:-Getting-Started-with-a-Wonderful-Hobby&id=103109 buy generic finasteride without a prescription canadian propecia cheap dreampharmaceuticals order propecia online canada pharmacy propecia

Lose Weight Faster: Cut A Few More Calories Each Day, And Jump Start Your Weight Loss Program

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Charles Lewis Most dieters find that everything goes well for the first few days or weeks of their diet. They are highly motivated to lose weight, so they stick to it. They probably lose a few pounds, and start feeling good. But then, inevitably, you hit a plateau. Your body adjusts to your new calorie intake and exercise level, and your weight loss slows down or stops. You need a way to jump start your weight loss, and I have found a simple way to do that: Cut a few more calories. Yes, I know, it seems simple, but it works. We all keep track of our calories, but at some point some calories start to creep back into diet that we may not even be aware of. It may be some extra dressing on our salad, or an extra snack during the day. So to jump start your weight loss program, cut back on those extra calories. Every morning when I got to work I would eat a healthy snack, either a piece of fruit, or a granola bar, or whatever. Now, I don’t.I have a healthy breakfast, and I wait until the middle of the morning to have my healthy snack. Then lunch, one healthy snack in the afternoon (not two), a healthy dinner, and then one more healthy snack (a small bowl of cereal) in the evening. Because I am spacing out my eating over the entire day, I don’t each huge quantities of food at any one time, and I don’t get hungry, so I can cut back a few calories, and jump start by weight loss. If you want to lose weight you need to work at it, but cutting just a few more calories is a simple way to jump start your weight loss program and get back on track. As a weight loss success story, Charles Lewis writes about how to lose weight permanently without fads or gimmicks. How to Choose the Perfect Headpiece and Veil for Your Facial and Body Features

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Cheryl King All brides want to be beautiful on their wedding day, and often it is easy for them to picture themselves in a wedding gown. But once something is placed upon the head, the whole perception of self-image is altered. A well-designed veil will accent or de-emphasize certain facial or body features if chosen thoughtfully, as well as match the brides personality, reflect the gowns features, and conform to the formality of the wedding and reception. The headpiece should be ornate enough for the gown and not look like an afterthought. It is a very condensed area and therefore may be more heavily beaded than the gown. Many brides have been misinformed and feel that if their gown very ornate they should opt for a very small, simple, and inexpensive headpiece, when they should be concerned that the overall effect is a balanced one. The area framing the face is not a very good area to skimp on since it is the most viewed area of the bride both in person and in photography. If it is possible to find or design a headpiece with some of the gowns prominent features a finished look will result. Be sure to use the same or very similar types of materials in your headpiece. It is ok, however, if the pattern itself varies. If in doubt, stick to an entirely beaded or floral headpiece to avoid conflict. Try to keep the styling of the headpiece in sync with your gown as well. Modern and contemporary gowns look great with beaded combs, tiaras, back pieces, asymmetricals, and forehead pieces. Traditional gowns fare well with beaded combs, tiaras, floral bandeaus, asymmetricals, hats and wreaths. Very formal gowns almost require a tiara, pillbox, Juliet cap, mantilla, or crown. In general, the best veil lengths are the waist-length and gown-length veils. These hit natural stopping points, and do not interfere with the gowns lines. Formal weddings almost beg for long veils (at least 6 past the train); and the illusion is very sheer so your gown will not be hidden underneath the veil at all. Detachable veils help to make these much more practical and comfortable. Fingertip veils tend to be the least flattering of all to both the bride and the gown. A well-designed headpiece will accent or de-emphasize certain facial features if chosen thoughtfully. For example, a wreath or halo effect will round and shorten a face. Pointed tiaras, which are taller in the center than the sides, will slim a face. As a general rule of thumb, any headpiece, which is tall and/or narrow, will slim and lengthen a face. Subsequently, a low and/or wide headpiece may shorten or widen a face. Therefore, if the bride wishes to de-emphasize a round face, she should avoid a round headpiece such as a wreath. Keep in mind that the veiling may also alter your appearance. Long veils will lengthen and slim a body while shorter veils may emphasize the waist and hip area. Edged veils also tend to call attention to their ending areas, especially a waist-length veils which ends in the midsection. Probably to best way to get the full effect is to stand about 10 feet from the mirror and be sure that you are creating the image you have long dreamed of. Below are some tips to help in the selection process: 1. To assure a uniform look, try to bring out your favorite features on your wedding gown. 2. You have spent a great deal of time on your gown, but how many pictures will actually show that train? And how many will show your face? Dont skimp here! 3. The correct veil length should generally hit at the waist or at least 6 inches past the train to avoid conflict with the lines of the gown. The train was designed to have long, flowing lines, and a fingertip veil will typically disrupt the lines creating a choppy, disharmonized look. 4. Try to find detachable veils if you would like a lighter look for the reception without messing up your wedding day hairstyle. 5. If you desire to slim or lengthen your face, try to implement long, slim lines in your headpiece and veiling. For example, try pointed tiaras or combs higher in the center than the sides. 6. For a long, thin face choose a more round looking ensemble. Wider, shorter tiaras and combs, brim hats, wreaths, and the like are often quite flattering. 7. A gown-length veil will also help to slim your figure! Think streamlined! Fingertip veils accent your hips!! 8. Stand back from the mirror to get the overall effect with both the gown and veil on. Dont tip your head down and look up at the mirror, because that is not how everyone else will see you. 9. Consider having your headpiece and veil custom designed by a professional bridal milliner who will measure the correct veil length on you. Many upscale salons will offer this or will measure and have their suppliers create exactly what will make your guests say, What a beautiful bride! rather than, What a beautiful gown/veil! Weight Loss Dilemma - When Your Will Power Will Not

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Ken Crawford If will power were gasoline, then each January 1st many of us could fill up the gas tanks of every automobile in our neighborhood as we make our annual proclamation to lose weight … one last time and forevermore! It’s at the first of each year that our will power is at its peak. It all starts with Thanksgiving — for it is during that prized holiday that many of us toss up our hands and give up for the rest of the year. We surrender to the turkey and dressing, the cranberry sauce and the pastries, the parties and the cocktails, the cakes and the side dishes. We embrace a mindset of defeat and entitlement giving into the notion that the holidays are here so what would be the point of trying to lose weight now. By the first of the year, we are so stuffed and guilt-ridden for every culinary sin that we have committed that we finally draw a line in the sand which just so happens to be located at the rock bottom of our anti-healthy lifestyle selves. It is from this depth that we can only go up as we envision our come-back, our return to the body of yesteryear (and for some, it’s not a return trip but a first time visit). We are filled, if only for a moment, with all the boldness we can muster as if standing on a summit shouting to the world that we’re finally going to do this thing for real, no kidding. Having shouted our resolutions to the world, fueled by will power and boldness, we are stunned to find that only days later the echo of our words reverberate back to us, passing by those we know and those we don’t. It is about this time that we wish we had remained silent as if not recognizing the person who had the nerve to utter such a resolution in the first place. Now everybody knows our weight loss hopes, dreams and goals. Next thing you know we’ve purchased a treadmill, a membership to the gym and all the accessories that go with it. Now I’m not saying that you shouldn’t buy a treadmill or join a gym and all that goes with it but all of that will power that you had on January 1st could easily be gone before the end of the month, week or even by the 2nd. All it takes is a drive down restaurant row where all of those good smelling aromas drift up your nostrils uninvited. Before you know it, you’re having an out of body experience with no explanation why your car suddenly ended up in the drive through lane. There you sit, wishing you were invisible, hoping that nobody you know will see you, especially someone from the gym. Heaven forbid! Now it is several weeks later or maybe you have made it into February before you stopped going to the gym as much — if not altogether. It’s about this time that we start silently rooting against all those other former rock bottom residents, fearing that they might actually make it out of the pit of fatness and leave us there alone to fend for ourselves. We look to our left, our right, behind, below and above and we wonder just where the heck old will power went. This is why I believe many of us join a gym with a friend, coworker or spouse. It’s a matter of accountability. I encourage you to find others who can help hold you accountable, but please recognize that one of the most important steps to weight loss is forgiving yourself for those post resolution moments when you might fall off of the wagon. I’m not condoning giving in to that piece of cheesecake that we both know you should not have, but if you do, it’s not the end of your program — it’s just a side track. Just remember that weight loss wagons don’t move very fast so if you do fall off, simply get back up, catch up to it and hop back on. Becoming One Financially

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Nathan Dawson When we think of marriage, most of us like to be romantic about it. Marriage brings images of engagement rings and a big white triple-layer cake. Nobody wants to talk about money management, prenuptials and other financial matters. However, statistics show that the top reason for divorce is disagreeing about money. Dont get carried away by the sheer romance of getting married. Discuss your financial concerns before you walk down the aisle. Prenuptial agreements These legally-binding contracts will save you quite a heartache in the event of a divorce. But who is ever considering divorce at the time of marriage? It may seem unromantic, and certainly, most of the time it may be unnecessary. However, if you stand to inherit a very large sum of money, if you have a trust fund, or if you own a business, a prenuptial can help you keep what is rightfully yours. Set a reasonable wedding budget With the average American wedding costing over $19,000, it makes sense to look into some affordable alternatives. Keeping it small and holding the ceremony and reception in a park or other scenic public place are just two examples of ways that you can save a ton. Be ready for tax-season If both spouses work, by law, they both must be taxed at the same rate as that of the highest income-earning spouse. Married couples will be happy to hear, however that the marriage tax penalty is being phased out over the next few years. Merge your money Legally, a married couple has joint-ownership of everything. Regardless, a husband and wife will often open a joint bank account to make household expenses easier to track. Discussing the financial details of marriage one-step-at-a-time can help ease the both of you into a fruitful and harmonious new life together.
